Thanks to the growth of the Internet and smartphones, we now use our phones for more than just calling like chatting, taking pictures, browsing the web and many more.
We seem to forget the main function of the phone is to make a call, but what happens when the phone receives a call without the screen on? Although it rings, you do not see the incoming call displayed on the screen.
If you have a similar problem, you don’t need to worry, just do some of the following.
Before doing any of the settings below, try the simple yet effective solution of restarting your phone.
While notifications for incoming calls are enabled by default on all phones, sometimes an update or third-party app can change this setting. Normally you cannot change this setting because it is grayed out. However, if an app or update causes it to change, you can change it.
To check and change the settings, follow these steps:
Step 1 . Open Settings on your phone and go to Apps/Application Manager .
Step 2. Find the default Phone app, tap it, then tap Notifications (on Android Pie devices) or App notifications (on Oreo).
Tip: Alternatively, you can touch and hold the Phone app on the home screen and select App info from the menu, then tap Notifications .
Step 3 . Tap Incoming calls , make sure Show notification is turned on. Then tap Behavior . If you see Show silently and minimize then this is the culprit causing the problem, change it to Make Sound and pop up on Screen .
If you see Make Sound and pop up on Screen, change it to another option to reset the settings, then select Make Sound and pop up on Screen again.
Note : If everything is correct, your Phone app’s important settings will be grayed out as shown in the screenshot above.
Another simple solution is to clear the cache from the Phone app. You don’t need to worry because clearing the cache will not delete your data. If clearing the cache doesn’t solve the problem, clear the app data. One thing to note is that clearing data will delete call history and reset Phone app settings.
To clear cache and data follow these steps:
Step 1 . Open Apps/Application Manager in Settings.
Step 2 . Tap the Phone app > Storage .
Step 3 . Tap on Clear cache first, then restart the device and see if the problem is fixed. If not, tap Clear data/storage depending on the options available on your phone.
Since the problem is mainly caused by the Phone app, resetting the app preferences can fix the problem. This will not delete the data, but some settings like notifications, permissions, etc. will be reset to default.
To reset application preferences, follow these steps:
Step 1 . Open Settings and go to Apps/Application Manager .
Step 2 . In All apps , tap the three-dot icon in the top right corner, select Reset app preferences from the menu.
Tip: If this option is not found, go to Settings > System > Reset options > Reset app preferences .
The Phone app needs the necessary permissions to display content on other apps. If you do not grant permission, this may interfere with the functionality of the application resulting in the call not being displayed on the screen.
To fix it, follow these steps:
Step 1 . Open Settings and tap Apps/Application Manager .
Step 2 . Tap Advanced > Special app access .
Step 3 . Tap Display over other apps > Phone .
Step 4 . Enable Allow display over other apps .
Don’t Disturb mode on Android is different from silent mode, which blocks interruptions in the form of visual notifications. If this feature is enabled, you will receive notifications in the notification panel but no sound or notifications appear.
To fix it, follow these steps:
Step 1 . Open Settings and go to Sound .
Step 2 . Tap on Do Not Disturb and make sure it’s turned off.
However, if you want to use Do not Disturb, tap Notifications and change No visuals or sound from notifications to No sound from notifications . With this option you will get pop-up notifications but no sound.
Also, you should check that the Do not Disturb mode is set to turn on automatically.
